Gebekum!

Nature created a dune landscape on the lovely Datça peninsula in south-west
Turkey that is six million years old. The villagers have always called this natural wonder Gebekum (Pregnant Sand), as though they knew that the unique history of the Mediterrean Sea was buried within its sands.

Because of this the Turkish government proclaimed it to be a "Specially Protected Area" in 1990, but did nothing to ensure its protection. Therefore, the environmental society Daçev has taken up this challenge since the beginning of 2004. So far Gebekum has been fenced in so that it can only be accessed by foot and will be further protected by the planting of 4500 trees along this fenceline.
